<abstract>Philip Gidley King sailed with his father P.P. King on the HMS <span style="font-style:italic">"Adventure"</span> 1826-1830 and became a midshipman on the <span style="font-style:italic">"Beagle"</span> in 1831. Both ships conducted hydrographic surveys of the South American coast and King became a life-long friend of Charles Darwin.</abstract>
