After post-graduate study in 1925 in the United Kingdom where he had first-hand experience of the efficacy of newly-discovered insulin, he established one of the first specialist diabetes clinics in Sydney in 1926. With G. V. Rudd he published the pioneering book The diagnosis and treatment of diabetes (1933) which ran to four editions by 1943. For nearly 60 years Ingram held senior positions with the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, where he was set up its pathology services and was integral to the establishment of its clinical school.
