For three years he was employed at the South Australian Institute, only resigning as Director in November 1884 following criticism of his efforts to secure the employment of curatorial and collecting staff. Haacke made a study of South Australian jellyfish, was the first to demonstrate that echidna laid eggs, and is credited with the introduction of the term orthogenesis. Before returning to Germany in 1886, he was Chief Scientist on the New Guinea Exploration Expedition to the Fly River in 1885.
