George Dovers was completing his studies to become a Licensed Surveyor when he joined the Australasian Antarctic Expedition under the leadership of Douglas Mawson. Dovers was cartographer at the Western Base (Queen Mary Land). He participated in several sledging parties, including those involved in the discovery of Haswell Island and Gaussberg. On returning from Antarctica he established a private practice in surveying in Wollongong, New South Wales. Cape Dovers, Queen Mary Land, Antarctica, was named in his honour.
