He was educated at Ballarat College and Ballarat School of Mines. From 1885 he worked as an assayer and chemist in Broken Hill. He travelled to America but returned to work in Kalgoorlie, Coolgardie and Mount Morgan and was Managing Director of Mount Elliot Ltd, Cloncurry.
