After an initial career as a surveyor, he joined the Western Australian Museum in 1962 as Assistant Curator of Invertebrates, holding the position of Curator of Ornithology and Herpetology for 23 years until his retirement in 1986. In his taxonomic studies on snakes, especially elapid genera, he emphasised physicals characters (such as scales) rather than those related to biological processes. He described over 230 new species and subspecies of reptiles. Storr was equally interested in the distribution of bird species. By scouring literature and unpublished field notes, backed by specimens and reliable field sightings, he produced a series of regional avifaunas covering much of Australia. For many years Storr was the representative of the Museum on the Bird Committee of the Western Australian Wildlife Authority.
