After obtaining his agricultural degree from the University of Sydney he spent six years with the Entomology Branch of the New South Wales Department of Agriculture. Much of his research here was on pest insects, notably blowflies with the Government Entomologist, William Gurney. In 1935 Woodhill became McCaughey Lecturer in Entomology at the University of Sydney, where he spent the rest of his career. One of his major contributions during this period was the large number of entomologists who emerged from his classes and later held senior positions in research and universities: among the Douglas Waterhouse, David Lee, Max Day and Don Colless. Woodhill's research was on the mosquitoes Aedes aegypti and, during WWII, Anopheles.
