Macleay and became seriously interested in entomology. He specialised in the beetle families Carabidae and Cicindelidae (ground and tiger beetles). Sloane's paper revising the classification of the Carabidae earned him an international reputation as an authority on the family. Other publications included descriptions of over 600 new species and a well-received paper of the faunal subregions of Australia.
