Octavius Sayce was a bacteriologist in Melbourne who was probably the first Australian to work on Crustaceae. He recognised the significance of Tasmanian Syncarida and published new taxa of phreatoicideans and freshwater asellotes. Sayce was an active member of the Field Naturalists Club and the Royal Society of Victoria. In 1911 the National Museum of Victoria purchased his collection of Crustaceae.
