William Paradice graduated in medicine from the University of Sydney in 1920. The following year he joined the Royal Australian Navy as a Surgeon Lieutenant. His main sea posting was to H.M.A.S. <span style="font-style:italic">Geranium</span> from 1923 during her cruise through Queensland and Northern Territory waters. In 1926 he was promoted Surgeon Lt Commander, posted to Garden Island in Sydney Harbour. Paradice made the most of his free time to study marine zoology, particularly fish and echinoderms. He had a fruitful association with the Australian Museum, frequently donating insects and other specimens including those collected during his posting to <span style="font-style:italic">Geranium</span>. In 1926 he made a hydrographic survey of the Gunnamatta mudflats at Port Hacking with the museum's entomologist, Anthony Musgrave. Paradice was a member of several local scientific societies, serving on the council of the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales and as President of the Microscopical Society of New South Wales. Among his publications were papers on corals of the Great Barrier Reef, Northern Territory fishes, and a description of an new genus of sea snake.
