For a short period he was employed by the Australian Museum, Sydney. He published Australian butterflies: a brief account of the native families (1888) originally as newspaper articles and later in book form in 1898. It was the first popular book devoted to Australian butterflies. Olliff's plans to publish a checklist of Australian butterflies came to nothing with his premature death.
