Between 1874 and 1892 he published a number of papers on butterflies, the most significant being A synonymical catalogue of the Lepidoptera Rhopalocera (butterflies) of Australia (1892) which listed 248 species. He was at odds with fellow Queensland entomologist Thomas P. Lucas over their respective competence and probity.
