<abstract>Herbert Hale joined the South Australian Institute (later the South Australian Museum) as a Cadet in 1914 and rose to be Director from 1931 to 1960. He was a zoologist who made significant contributions to the study of crustaceans. Hale was a regular participant in field expeditions for the Museum. He also joined such expeditions for the Board of Anthropological Research, of which he was Secretary for 28 years. President of the Royal Society of South Australia from 1936 to 1937, Hale was also active in the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia and the Anthropological Society of South Australia.</abstract>
