He became an expert in moths, but also had an interest in shells. In 1905 he was a volunteer assistant at the Australian Museum and was later employed as a conchologist. Goldfinch also worked for Dalgety's, a merchant company dealing mainly in wool, from 1922-1934. Gilbert Goldfinch was secretary of the University Club (1934-1942) and a member (since 1912) and councillor (1925-1931) of the Linnean Society of New South Wales.
