He joined the navy at 15 to serve in the Seven Years' War. In the following peace he spent more than 20 years in the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean. Appointed Commander of the Indian Station in 1786, he made his first significant exploratory voyage, finding a new route to China through the Sunda Strait and the Moluccas. He then served as Governor of Ile de France and Ile de Bourbon. In 1791 Bruny d'Entrecasteaux was selected to lead a voyage to seek traces of the explorer Jean-François de La Pérouse. Commanding the ship Recherche and accompanied by Espérance, his orders were to go to Van Diemen's Land, and then to the Friendly Islands and New Caledonia, following La Pérouse's likely route. Naturalists on the expedition included Jacques-Julien Labillardière and Claude Riche. Having left Brest in September 1791, in April 1792 the expedition reached Van Diemen's Land. By July they were in the Admiralty Islands and, after sailing through the Indonesian islands, reached Cape Leeuwin in November and returned to Van Diemen's Land. From there they headed for New Caledonia. No trace of La Pérouse was found. Bruny d'Entrecasteaux died in New Guinean waters on the voyage home. He is commemorated in Bruny Island and the d'Entrecasteaux Channel, both in Tasmania. Pierson, Ambroise
