Prior to this he worked at a number of Australia's leading research organisations and held many short-term visiting scientist posts overseas. Having retired from JCSMR McKenzie spent the next 15 years teaching at the School of Chemistry of the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra. His research, which included a number of international collaborations, focused on protein chemistry, particularly the interaction of water with proteins.
