Harald Dannevig was experienced in marine fisheries when he was appointed in 1902 as Director of Fisheries to the New South Wales Government. His responsibilities were to supervise fisheries investigations and fish hatcheries. He attempted (ultimately unsuccessful) experiments in fish acclimatisation and laid the foundation for the purchase of trawlers by the Government. In 1908 Dannevig became Director of Fisheries for the Australian Government. For the next six years he made extensive use of Australia's first purpose-built fisheries research vessel F.I.S. <span style="font-style:italic">Endeavour</span>, identifying potentially valuable fishing grounds off the New South Wales and Tasmanian coasts and in the Great Australian Bight. Other results of these researches included the collection of over 5,000 specimens and the identification of nearly 300 new species of which nearly 100 were previously unknown fish. Dannevig disappeared at sea when, on board <span style="font-style:italic">Endeavour</span> during a visit to Macquarie Island, the ship vanished while returning to Hobart.
