<biogHist>
<abstract>Frederick Berney was the owner of the Barcarolle Station in Queensland and was an active naturalist.</abstract>
<p>Born Croydon, England, 25 November 1865. Died Emu Park, Queensland, 8 March 1949. Educated Whitgift Grammar School, Croydon. Came to Australia ca 1890. Jackaroo, Landsdown station, near Longreach; managed a property at Richmond, north Queensland, for several years, dairy farm, Cawarral, near Yeppoon; served in Egypt during World War I; returned to Queensland and bought Barcarolle Station , where he lived 1919-39; retired to Melbourne; later took a book-keeper's job at a station in western Queensland. Member, Australasian Ornithologists Union from 1901, honorary member, and president 1933-34. Worked hard to ensure protection for the Bustard, with the result that total protection was granted in every State. Other work included talks at schools and an active interest in the Central Queensland Native Birds Protection Association. Kept nature diaries, including ornithological observations 1898-1946.</p>
