His work in this field brought him considerable international recognition. Baker's collection of over 2,5000 Victorian tektites was bequeathed to the National Museum of Victoria.

Junior assistant, Geology School, University of Melbourne from 1925; worked at the University of Melbourne till 1968, although an employee of CSIRO from 1948; Honorary Associate in Mineralogy, National Museum of Victoria. Syme Prize (shared) 1944, first recipient of Royal Society of Victoria's Research Medal 1959. Commissioner for Australia of the International Committee on Meteorites.
