<abstract>John Arthur was Melbourne's first botanical gardener. He arrived in Port Phillip in the first Scottish migrant barque, the "David Clark", in 1839.</abstract>
<p>Born Dunkeld, Scotland, 1804. Died Melbourne, January 1849. Trained as a landscape gardener in Scotland; arrived Melbourne 1839; farming, Heidelberg district; first superintendent, Melbourne Botanic Gardens 1846-49.</p>
