He eventually recorded 24 previously unknown species.

Born Gordon, Tasmania, 17 March 1874. Died Launceston, Tasmania, 16 June 1960. Educated University of Tasmania (BA 1899). Various church positions 1901-16, rector, Holy Trinity Church, Hobart 1916-24, archdeacon of Darwin and Launceston with responsibility for all Tasmania north of Conara, the west coast and Flinders and King islands 1928-49. A childhood interest in orchids was revived in the 1920s and he began to collect and classify the Tasmanian varieties, eventually recording 24 previously unknown species. Caladenia atkinsonii Rod. was named after him.
