William Angus arrived in South Australia in 1904 to be Professor (later Director) of Agriculture and secretary to the Minister of Agriculture. He resigned in 1910 but maintained a high public profile advocating scientific farming and teaching in this area. Before coming to Australia he taught at Stirling High School, Knox Institute (Haddington), West of Scotland Agricultural College (Glasgow), and Yorkshire College (Leeds) and was Principal at Cheshire County Council Agricultural College (Holmes Chapel). During his first few years in Australia, lectured to farmers, published numerous articles and taught and examined at Roseworthy Agricultural College. From 1934 to 1944 he taught at Scotch College where he reorganized the agricultural science course, established a model farm and planted a small orchard. William Angus also spent many years farming where he experimented with different growing practices and crops including wheat, potatoes and manures.
