<abstract>James Pollock was appointed second astronomical assistant to the New South Wales Government Astronomer in 1886. He graduated BSc at the University of Sydney in 1889 and was appointed demonstrator under Richard Threlfall. In 1899 Pollock was appointed Professor of Physics. He was noted for his research on optics, Hertzian (electromagnetic) waves and atmospheric ions. The Pollock Memorial Lecture has been awarded since 1949 by the Royal Society of New South Wales to Australian and international physicists eminent in their fields.</abstract>
