He was particularly interested in oysters (he discovered sex-change in the eastern Australian oyster), but also studied Australian salmon and prawns. Roughley was also was an outstanding photographer and microscopist, and skilled artist. After joining the Technological Museum, Sydney, as Economic Zoologist, in 1911, he left the Museum in 1939 to join the New South Wales State Fisheries Branch, retiring in 1952 as Superintendent of Fisheries. Roughley's interests were not confined to fisheries: he sought to establish Lawrence Hargrave as a pioneer of aviation in Australia.
