<abstract>Johann Luehmann worked at the Botanical Museum of Melbourne under Ferdinand von Mueller from 1868 to 1896, initially as Clerk and later as Deputy Government Botanist. It was from Mueller that he received his botanical training, becoming expert in the genera <span style="font-style:italic">Eucalyptus</span> and <span style="font-style:italic">Acacia</span>. After Mueller's death in 1896 Luehmann was appointed Curator of the restyled National Herbarium of Victoria, only becoming Government Botanist in 1900. His field collecting resulted in over 400 specimens being deposited in the Herbarium. Luehmann was a foundation member of the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria and served several terms on council including as Vice-President 1899 - 1901. His publications including a key to <span style="font-style:italic">Eucalyptus</span> and a paper on the identification of Victorian grasses.</abstract>
