It was from Mueller that he received his botanical training, becoming expert in the genera Eucalyptus and Acacia. After Mueller's death in 1896 Luehmann was appointed Curator of the restyled National Herbarium of Victoria, only becoming Government Botanist in 1900. His field collecting resulted in over 400 specimens being deposited in the Herbarium. Luehmann was a foundation member of the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria and served several terms on council including as Vice-President 1899 - 1901.
