Denis Carr was a professor in the Department of Developmental Biology, Research School of Biological Sciences, Australian National University from 1968. He and his wife Maisie were noted for their work in the Alpine regions of New South Wales and Victoria. Dennis and Maisie Carr named many eucalypts, particularly bloodwoods (<span style="font-style:italic">Corymbia</span> species), including the Corymbia dampieri in 1987. Their species concept was very fine and many of their species have subsequently been incorporated into others. Nonetheless, many have withstood scrutiny and are still accepted. Denis Carr obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Manchester in the UK.
