His maize breeding program produced the first hybrid seed that was released for commercial production in Australia and as a result of his work the industry changed almost completely to using hybrid varieties.

Born Brighton, Sussex, England, 23 July 1907. Died Brisbane, 26 February 1974. Educated University of Queensland (BAgrSc (hons) 1929, MAgrSc 1935, DSc 1969). Lecturer in genetics, University of Queensland 1930- ; instructor in plant breeding, Queensland Agricultural College 1930-50; Senior Research Scientist, CSIRO Division of Tropical Pastures 1950-72. Foundation member, Queensland Pasture Liaison committee 1952-71; foundation member, Queensland Herbage Plant Liaison committee 1964-71.
