He was Professor of Geology and Mineralogy from 1947 to 1959. In his research he made significant contributions to understanding the stratigraphy and geological evolution of Queensland and marine geology. He established the first seismological research station in Queensland in 1937 following the Gayndah earthquake, leading efforts to utilise seismological stations for hazard mitigation. Bryan was actively involved in professional organisations, serving as President of the Royal Society of Queensland and the Geology Section if Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science, and Chairman of the Queensland Division of the Geological Society of Australia.
