After joining the staff of the Queensland Botany Branch (later the Herbarium) in 1953 where he embarked on an ecological survey of brigalow lands. He surveyed the brigalow scrub in all parts of Queensland and was instrumental in developing land management programs for control and the prevention of regrowth of brigalow. He continued to monitor a transect for 46 years. His taxonomic research covered a number of groups, particularly the family Convolvulaceae. Johnson played a major role in databasing the Queensland Herbarium's specimen records, one of the first herbaria in the world to do so. He was active in the wider scientific community, serving as office bearer for the Ecological Society of Australia, the Royal Society of Queensland, the Federation of Australian Scientific and Technological Societies and other organisations.
