His principal research was in the Leguminosae, particularly Acacia. Pedley had an extensive knowledge of the Queensland flora, in part from numerous field surveys including for CSIRO in the 1960s. He published descriptions of over 180 new species, although his proposal that Australia's species of Acacia be referred to Racospermum did not meet with the agreement of the Australian botanical community. His collection of over 4,000 specimens is in the Queensland Herbarium.
