Leopold Dintenfass had a significant international reputation in the field of biorheology. After arriving in Sydney he worked for several years in the paint industry before changing to biorheological research. Dintenfass was noted for his skill in designing instruments ('viscometers') for making his pioneering measurements. He developed the first Australian experiment conducted on the space shuttle and published widely on haemorheology and biorheology, notably the books <span style="font-style:italic">Blood microrheology</span> (1971) and <span style="font-style:italic">Rheology of blood in diagnostic and preventive medicine</span> (1976). Dintenfass was Honorary Associate, Department of Medicine, University of Sydney 1962 - 1967, and Honorary Senior Research Fellow, Kanematsu Memorial Institute of Pathology, Sydney Hospital 1967 - 1975. He then became Director of Haemorheology and Biorheology at the Institute from 1976 to 1982, moving his laboratory to the Rachel Forster Hospital, Redfern, when the Institute was dispersed.
