Born in England, David Allbrook completed his medical studies at University College in London and went into general practice. But after four years he took up an appointment at the Makerere University College in Uganda, firstly as senior lecturer in anatomy and medical officer for the Student Health Service (1952-1958), then Reader (1961-1965) and then honorary Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (1962-1965). He held the same honorary position with the University of East Africa. Later Allan was appointed Vice-president and Councilor of the Ugandan Medical Association. He left Africa in 1965 to accept the post of Professor of Anatomy at the University of Western Australia, a position he held for over 20 years.

Throughout the 1980s David Allbrook was visiting medical officer or fellow at many overseas institutes and hospitals. He took on many concurrent administrative and honorary positions back in Western Australia and for over 15 years has been an external examiner for medical faculties from universities around the world. Allbrook is a member of at least 11 national and international academic societies including the Zoological Society of London and he is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal studies. He retired in December 1986 putting an end to his prodigious career.
