He was district surgeon, a quaker, a keen botanist and was Secretary of the Royal Society of Tasmania 1844-1846. "He collected ancestral human remains to display in a small private museum at Kelvedon [Tasmania] and nine skulls of the First People originally displayed in his museum were eventually purchased from his heirs for the University of Melbourne.
