He had a short stint with the Australian Imperial Force then moved to Melbourne where he completed a Bachelor of Dentistry (1922). Three years later he was appointed dental house surgeon at the Adelaide Hospital and from 1930 was their honorary dental surgeon. Lawrence also worked in private practice and taught at the University of Adelaide.
