(Sir) John McCall ran a successful private medical practice in Tasmania (Waratah then Ulverstone) for many years. He was also an active member of parliament: McCall served two periods as the representative for West Devon in the House of Assembly and was the Minister for Agriculture from April 1903 to July 1904. During World War I, McCall took charge of the Australian Auxiliary Hospital in London, was President of the Australian Natives' Association in London and Chairman of the Australian Voluntary Hospital in Wimereux, France where established a home for recuperating Belgian soldiers. He was awarded the Belgian Order of the Crown for his efforts. In 1911 McCall was knighted then in 1919 was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG).
