Ernest Goddard was a zoologist who conducted well-regarded research on leeches (Hirudinae) and earthworms (Oligochaetae). For four years he was Professor of Zoology, Geological and Mineralogy at Victoria College, South Africa, where he instigated a zoological survey of the country and established the South African Marine Biological and Oceanographic Station. Goddard returned to Australia in 1922 to become Professor of Biology at the University of Queensland. He played a central role in the foundation of the Faculties of Dentistry and Medicine, and was Dean of the Faculties of Agriculture and Dentistry. His involvement in wider agricultural issues included the eradication of Prickly Pear, the banana disease Bunchy top, and a secondment to the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Stock. Goddard was an early member of the Entomological Society of Queensland and served as President of the Royal Society of Queensland.
