He had a high reputation as a consulting surgeon. From 1934 he was honorary surgeon to in-patients at the Melbourne Hospital. He served with the Australian Army Medical Corps during World War I and as consulting surgeon, and later director of surgery, for the Australian Imperial Force during World War II.

Born Moonee Ponds, Melbourne, 9 June 1891. Died East Melbourne, 22 January 1949. DSO 1917. Educated University of Melbourne (MB, ChB 1914). Hospital resident 1914, Australian Army Medical Corps 1915-18, study in London for FRCS 1919, general practice, Moonee Ponds 1920-34, honorary out-patient surgeon and clinical lecturer in surgery, Melbourne Hospital ca 1921-34, honorary surgeon to in-patients from 1934, dean of the hospital clinical school from 1936, Stewart lecturer in surgery, University of Melbourne from 1937, consulting surgeon to the Australian Imperial Force as colonel from 1940, director of surgery from 1942 and brigadier from February 1944. Syme Oration 1947. Commemorated by the "Hailes Room" at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, where he was censor-in-chief from 1943 and councillor from 1944.
