<abstract>Jock Marshall was the founding Professor of Zoology and Comparative Physiology and Dean of Science, Monash University 1960-1967. He was previously Reader in Zoology and Comparative Anatomy at the University of London 1949-1959 and had a distinguished war record.</abstract>
<p>Born Sydney, 17 February 1911. Died Melbourne, 20 July 1967. Educated Universities of Sydney (BSc 1940) and Oxford (DPhil 1949, DSc 1956). Lost left arm in a shotgun accident 1927; member, Oxford University New Hebrides Expedition 1934; features writer, <span style="font-style:italic">The Sun</span> (Sydney daily newspaper) 1934; honorary ornithologist, Australian Museum 1935; University of Sydney 1935; member, Mandated and Dutch New Guinea Expedition 1936; leader, North West Spitsbergen Expedition 1937; undergraduate, University of Sydney 1938-40; tutor, St Paul's College, University of Sydney 1938; special writer and principal book reviewer, <span style="font-style:italic">The Daily Telegraph</span> 1939; student demonstrator, Department of Zoology, University of Sydney 1939-40; resident tutor in zoology and Grainger Postgraduate Scholar, St Paul's College, University of Sydney 1940-41; Army Education Service 1941; war service 1941-45; leader, Oxford University Jan Mayan Expedition 1947; demonstrator in zoology and animal physiology and DPhil student, Oxford University 1947-49; Reader in Zoology and Comparative Anatomy, St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, University of London 1949-60; foundation Professor of Zoology and Comparative Physiology and Dean of Science, Monash University 1960-67. Back Award, Royal Geographical Society of London 1948; Corresponding Fellow, American Ornithologists' Union 1955; Fellow, Royal Australasian Ornithologists' Union 1958. Commemorated by Jock Marshall Zoology Reserve, Monash University. Wrote a number of bestsellers, including <span style="font-style:italic">Australia Limited</span> (1941), <span style="font-style:italic">Testament of Doubt</span> (1945), <span style="font-style:italic">Journey Among Men</span> (1962, with Russell Drysdale) and <span style="font-style:italic">The Great Extermination</span> (1966).</p>
