William Redfern came to Australia as a convict in 1802 and was granted a pardon in 1803. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon in the Colony in 1808. Redfern's contribution to Australian medicine and public health was significant. The Dictionary of Australian Biography (1967) describes him as the "first to receive an Australian qualification, the first teacher of Australian medical students, and the author of important reforms in the convict transports".
