He was educated at the University of Melbourne, and worked with the P.M.G. in 1927 as a Post Office engineer until the Second World war, when he saw service as a Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the Sixth Division Signals abroad. Later in the war he became Director, Radio and Signals Supplies in the Department of Munitions. From 1961 until 1976, he was Managing Director of Standard Telephones and Cables Pty Ltd and led STC into exporting sophisticated locally manufactured telecommunications equipment. He served industry on many and various associations and on the Government Electronics in Telecommunications Advisory Council.
