His particular interest was in the rock warbler. He published prolifically on natural history topics, particularly birds, pioneer naturalists and early colonial artists. Hindwood wrote a column, 'Nature Notes and Studies', in the Land newspaper 1931 - 1932, under the pseudonym 'Oriole', while his photographs appeared in the Sydney mail between 1928 and 1937. In his lifetime he contributed more material to The Emu than anyone else.
