He was also a keen botanist and collected plants in California, Chile and Australia. His collecting expeditions took in the Swan River, Leeuwins Land, north of King Georges Sound, Cockburn Sound to Geographe Bay and from Albany to French River. His plant specimens were sent to the Herbarium at Kew Botanical Gardens, London. 1867 1867 Taxonomy event - Eucalyptus loxophleba Benth. Collie collected a syntype Colony of Western Australia (1829 - 1901) 1832 1835
