<abstract>John Browne accompanied Charles Sturt on his expedition of 1844-1845 as the medical officer.</abstract>
<p>Born Wiltshire, England, 1817. Died Bath, England, January 1904. Educated University of Edinburgh (medical degree). Arrived South Australia 1840. Pastoral and agricultural pursuits with his brother, William James, for about 26 years (at one time the largest exporters of wool in South Australia and the first men to ship wool from Port Augusta); their best-known properties were Booborowie in the mid-north, Moorak near Mount Gambier (William's home) and Buckland Park (John's home); accompanied Sturt's (q.v.) expedition to central Australia as medical officer 1844-45; lived at Buckland Park for about eight years, then sold out to his brother; after his partnership with his brother was dissolved in 1866 went to England for 10 or 12 years, revisiting South Australia several times, then lived permanently in England.</p>
