He was responsible for all the mechanical, electrical and marine engineering in the company's mills in New South Wales, Queensland and Fiji, their large workshops at Pyrmont, Sydney, as well as their fleet of ships. He was a driving force in the engineering profession, as President of the Engineering Association of New South Wales, and its amalgamation with other foundation societies to establish the Institution of Engineers Australia in 1919, and he served as a foundation Councillor from 1919 to 1938, and its President in 1929.
