It took him eight years to complete a Bachelor of Arts (1896), because he had to work to support himself. First he worked as a schoolteacher in north-east Victoria and Gippsland, then was appointed headmaster of St James's Grammar School in Melbourne. Hart then completed a Master of Arts, a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science over the next eleven years. During this time, he continued to teach, lecturing in the fields of science, business and English. He worked at Melbourne Grammar School, the Working Men's College, and at various Catholic teachers' colleges. He also ran his own chemical analysis business for several years and was an ardent scholar of Shakespeare's works.
