<abstract>William Haswell was trained in Scotland, and undertook research in Australia from 1878 into marine zoology and in 1882 joined the University of Sydney. He was appointed Professor of Biology in 1890 (restyled zoology in 1915). He wrote widely on marine biology and zoology. His research focussed on Crustaceae, Annelida and Bryozoa of Australian seas. He is remembered for <span style="font-style:italic">A text book of zoology</span> (1897), co-authored with T. J. Parker of University of Otago, a "monumental work of scholarship" which ran to four editions by 1928.</abstract>
