He was appointed Professor of Biology in 1890 (restyled zoology in 1915). He wrote widely on marine biology and zoology. His research focussed on Crustaceae, Annelida and Bryozoa of Australian seas. He is remembered for A text book of zoology (1897), co-authored with T. J.
