Frances Holden was Lady Superintendent of the Hospital for Sick Children, Sydney from 1880 to 1887, during which time she published works on medicine and nursing training as well as verse and prose. She was dismissed from that position in 1887 after a bitter dispute and public inquiry. After 1887 she lectured and continued to write on nursing and hygiene. She was a feminist and member of the Dawn Club.
