Alan Holmes à Court was a medical practitioner in New South Wales (NSW) from 1911. During World War I he served with the medical wings of the Australian Imperial Force in France and was awarded the French Médaille des Epidémies. Holmes à Court was a pioneer of blood transfusion techniques and a lecturer in anaesthetics and clinical medicine. He wrote many medical articles and was heavily involved in medicine's governing bodies: he was a long term member, and one-time president of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians; President and council member of the British Medical Association (NSW branch), a member of the NSW Medical Board and was appointed a Fellow of London's Royal College of Physicians.
