Frank Hone set up practice in Adelaide in 1903 and throughout his career was active in the public health movement and in medical professional bodies. He was a strong advocate of the efficacy of preventive medicine. For many years he lectured in preventative medicine and public health at the University of Adelaide where he pioneered the development of student health services. In 1939 he chaired the University's Anti-Cancer Committee which through his efforts became the Anti-Cancer Foundation of South Australia. Hone played a central role in the Commonwealth Government's Royal Commission on Health, the recommendations of which resulted in the formation of the National Health and Medical Research Council, the Commonwealth X-ray and Radium Laboratory and the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories, and a national campaign against tuberculosis. Other appointments for the Australian Government included as Chief Quarantine Officer for South Australia. In 1924 Hone was a founding director of the Australasian Medical Publishing Company, the publisher of the <span style="font-style:italic">Medical Journal of Australia</span>.
