He also worked in private practice and served as a medical officer in both wars (volunteer, not enlisted during World War I). Edye was professor of surgery at the University of Sydney for two years (1928-1930) and set up the surgical unit at the Rachel Forster Hospital for Women and Children. He was also a co-founder of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
