<biogHist>
<abstract>Sir Benjamin Edye was a surgeon at the Royal Prince Alfred and St Vincent's Hospitals for many years and surgical consultant at the St George, Manly and Ryde Hospitals. He also worked in private practice and served as a medical officer in both wars (volunteer, not enlisted during World War I). Edye was professor of surgery at the University of Sydney for two years (1928-1930) and set up the surgical unit at the Rachel Forster Hospital for Women and Children. He was also a co-founder of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Benjamin Edye was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1957 and was knighted (Knight Bachelor) in 1958.</abstract>
